MILFORD —
For its 10th anniversary season, Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra will reprise some of its most memorable shows including Beethoven's 5th Symphony, music from "Lord of the Rings" and "Tubby the Tuba."

But the Milford orchestra's most dramatic performance just might be members' determination to keep playing in the face of economic uncertainty.

Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra Announces
10th Anniversary Season with New Concert Master

Milford, MA -- Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra, noted by Boston music commentator Ron Della Chiesa as “one of the finest regional orchestras in the country, bar none,” has announced its 10th Anniversary Season with tickets going on sale this month.

“We are looking to make this our most exciting season ever,” said Executive Director Paul Surapine. “We have come a long way in the past decade and the concert schedule has been planned to celebrate our exceptional musicians and showcase their extraordinary talent.”

As longtime Claflin Hill concertmaster Nicola Takov leaves the stage, lured away by one of the finest orchestras in Spain, Surapine announces a second Bulgarian native, Angel Valchinov, as his replacement.

Valchinov, a resident of Newton, is at the forefront of the violin world, having been a semi-finalist at the “Vaclav Huml” International Violin Competition in Zagreb, Croatia, and won First Prize at the California Young Artist Competition and the Temecula Young Artist Competition. In addition, he has won the Concerto Competitions at both the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California and the Harid Conservatory in Florida. Conductors he has performed with in the U.S. and Europe have commented, “His Beethoven Concerto is stellar: performed in the only way it should be played” and “His Dvorak Concerto is incredibly beautiful, one of a kind.”

In welcoming Valchinov, Surapine explains, “The quality of our musicians and their ability to mesh flawlessly as an orchestra are the real joys of this organization. It is what has kept us going for a decade, amidst financial ups and downs for all non-profits, but especially those dedicated to the arts.

“These musicians work all over the country and the world,” said Surapine, “and yet they feel so committed to keeping the legacy of professional music alive here that they have actually volunteered their talents during the leanest times. We are hoping the community will use the 10th Anniversary Season as an occasion to support them both financially and with record-breaking audiences.”

The past ten years have seen Surapine take a group of local band members who enjoyed performing free summer band concerts in Milford’s Town Park and build a professional music performance foundation for the region. Dozens of world-class musicians have been attracted to the area to continue the free summer band series, launch a regional symphony orchestra and participate in various educational initiatives and mentor programs that have fostered young musicians moving up through the ranks and returning to play professionally in the symphony orchestra along side their previous idols.

“Professional live music is a treasure in this community, one which has a very rich tradition of music. Claflin Hill has magnificently carried on this tradition,” said Francis M. Saba, CEO of Milford Regional Medical Center, who hired the orchestra for several hospital galas and has supported various concerts throughout the past decade. “While our Medical Center works to help local residents with their physical and mental well-being, Claflin Hill’s beautiful music further enhances the quality of life for our region. We congratulate them on their 10th Anniversary Year.”

Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra’s 10th Anniversary Season offers the community eight opportunities to engage with live music, beginning on Saturday, November 7th. The season includes five symphony performances (including the Holiday Pops concert), two family concerts and a reprise of last season’s very popular chamber orchestra.

“We have crafted the season to bring back some of the community’s favorite pieces from the past decade,” said Surapine. “The orchestra is very excited to perform this breadth of work, which ranges from Beethoven and Mozart to Duke Ellington and Copland and right through music from Lord of the Rings and children’s selections from ‘Tubby the Tuba.’”

Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra invites business leaders in the community to support the 10th Anniversary season with financial sponsorships, offering special title nights for companies wanting to entertain customers and employees in a very special setting.
