Claflin Hill Symphony
Receives Educational Grant from Verizon
The Claflin Hill
Symphony Orchestra is proud to announce a major grant award from the
Verizon Charitable Foundation that will fund a new educational
partnership with the Milford Public School Music Department beginning in
the fall of 2008.
Claflin Hill was
notified on Monday, May 11th of the grant approval by Ellen Cummings,
Regional Director of External Affairs for Verizon, who was a major
advocate of the grant award.
The Claflin Hill
Symphony—Milford Public School Music Department Collaborative will be a
comprehensive “mentoring” project that will bring professional musicians
and educators from the CHSO to Milford High School to work with the
student musicians in the band and orchestral programs as mentors and
clinicians, working in partnership with the school’s Music Department
Faculty. The partnership will also include demonstration concert visits
by small ensembles of the orchestra to Milford’s elementary schools
during the course of the 2008-09 school year, as well as “open
rehearsals” of the symphony during the school at both Milford High
School and Stacy Middle School. This new educational project will
follow the outline of the successful mentoring program that Claflin Hill
has in place with the MetroWest Youth Symphony Orchestra in Framingham
which has been ongoing since 2005. “Education has always been a top
funding priority for Verizon. We are happy to be able to help support
the Claflin Hill Music Performance Foundation to bring the Symphony
Orchestra's Youth Outreach Program to the Milford Public Schools,” said
Cummings.
“We are very
grateful and pleased to be the recipient of this major grant from
Verizon,” said Paul Surapine, Executive & Artistic Director of the
Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra. “This collaborative partnership with
the school department of our home town is something that we’ve been
planning and outlining since last spring, when Robert Tremblay was
appointed as the new Superintendent of Schools for Milford. Within the
first month of his tenure as Superintendent, I met with Bob Tremblay and
Nadine Pomeroy, Director of Music for Milford Public Schools. We
brainstormed on the building of a cultural partnership between the
Milford schools and our region’s resident professional symphony
orchestra, The CHSO. Claflin Hill wrote a grant proposal to Verizon
requesting support for this collaboration. Later, a face-to-face meeting
was requested by Verizon which Bob and I attended. Superintendent
Tremblay’s participation in that meeting was a key factor in the grant
decision. We are very excited about this new project and can’t wait for
the next school year to begin!”
