Imaginations will shimmer and creativity will flow as the Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra presents an afternoon of magical symphonic music!

The CHSO’s production of “Meet the Orchestra” is the perfect introduction to the orchestra in a family-friendly setting.  This short program will excite and grab the attention of young listeners, as well as inspire their minds! Bring the whole family for a delightful afternoon of music that will appeal to one and all!

For an exciting hands-on experience, The Music Nook (aka, Music and Arts) will provide an “instrument petting zoo” where children will have the opportunity to explore all the instruments of the orchestra by touching, seeing and hearing.

As a special treat, Superintendent of the Milford Public School’s, Robert Tremblay, will narrate one of the most well-known orchestral works written especially for the young listener, Benjamin Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. This piece presents an overview of the entire orchestra, interspersed with demonstrations of the capabilities of each instrument, and is a piece of music that will be thoroughly enjoyed by both young listeners, and the young at heart.

Robert A. Tremblay began studying the trumpet at the age of nine as a student in the Manchester, New Hampshire public schools.  During his high school career, Mr. Tremblay traveled to Germany as an American exchange student, performing as a soloist in churches in Southern Germany and France. Additionally, he performed with the Gimmeldingen, Germany Brass Choir as principal trumpet during a tour to Lincoln, England.  During his stay in Europe in 1988, Mr. Tremblay had the unique opportunity to perform two concerts as third alphornist with the Luzern Alphorn Trio.  Upon returning to the United States, he won the assistant principal trumpet chair with the New Hampshire Philharmonic Orchestra and performed regularly with 39th Army National Guard Band.

Mr. Tremblay attended Boston University’s School for the Arts where he studied with Boston freelance trumpeter, Charles Lewis, Jr., former principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Roger Voisin, and the accomplished Empire Brass Quintet.  While pursuing his degree in music education, he performed regularly as a trumpet soloist with the Mozart Society Chamber Orchestra in Cambridge, Massachusetts and joined the Greater Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra as principal trumpet during their tour to Scandinavia.  Additionally, Mr. Tremblay recorded original works for Piccolo Trumpet and Timpani by Russian Composer, Irina Bykova, for the International Trumpet Guild Competition in 1994.

In the important roles that he holds as husband, father, school administrator, doctoral student, and musician, Mr. Tremblay works tirelessly to balance family responsibilities, administrative obligations, academic pursuits and his musical passion.

“I am looking forward to this concert with the CHSO because it affords me the opportunity to surround myself with a high caliber of musicianship while connecting with an audience of those Milford families whom I serve in my role as Superintendent of Schools.  Most importantly, my family is able to join me for this event and similarly surround themselves with the talents of our local symphony.”                                                  ~Robert Trembley

Artistic and Executive Director Paul Surapine has chosen pieces for this presentation that will highlight the different sections of the orchestra. The string section will be featured as they play Canon in D by Pachelbel. The wind section will be highlighted as they play Mozart’s Wind Serenade Movement.  The brass section will wow the audience with Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man – an all-time favorite. Also featured during this concert will be Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro Overture and Copland’s Hoe Down.  Children will be jazzed to hear something familiar to them—all their favorites from the popular movie, “High School Musical.”

Claflin Hill Symphony Orchestra family concerts are specially designed to introduce children and their parents to the wonders of a live symphony concert. Experience this performance and make it a family outing! This affordable afternoon will be sure to spark the imaginations of the whole family!
